We often notice our carpets getting dull and grimy due to daily wear and tear. And many of us might use strong, chemical-based cleaning solutions to achieve that spotless look.

The carpet may appear neat on the surface but the toxic chemicals can be damaging its delicate fibers internally, while also affecting your family’s health. That’s why, using chemical-free and safe methods for cleaning is the most preferable option.

Eco Friendly Carpet Cleaning Techniques for Clean & Safe Environment

1. Vacuuming

One of the best methods to clean a carpet regularly without using any kind of strong chemicals is vacuuming. Use a suitable, high-suction vacuum cleaners to clean your carpets twice or thrice a week and it will prevent the build-up of ingrained dirt that pollutes the environment.

Regular vacuuming helps prevent damage to the carpet fibers and increases their lifespan by preventing the dirt and debris getting deep inside your carpet fibers.

2. Hot Water Extraction

The process of hot water extraction involves the penetration of pressurized hot water, mixed with a chemical-free detergent (or vinegar), into the carpet fibers to agitate them and loosen up the dirt within.

Then, it is immediately vacuumed with high suction, pulling out all the dirt, grime, and germs with the hot water that was pumped in.

This technique is considered the most effective and safest one to remove tough dirt and germs from deep within the carpet, while also making the fibers softer without any damage.

3. Steam Cleaning

Partially similar to hot water extraction, steam cleaning makes the use of steam (high-temperature water vapors), without using any detergents or chemicals, to dislodge the dust with the same penetration and extraction method.

This method uses less amount of water and gives cleaner and safer results, making your carpets dirt-free, while also killing all the trapped bacteria in your carpet fibers.

4. Dry Carpet Cleaning

This is a speedy and sustainable method that uses dry compounds (preferably eco-friendly ones) to be spread on the carpet. These compounds are allowed to absorb all the dirt particles and odor from the carpet fibers. Then, they are later vacuumed with high-power vacuum cleaners, getting fresher, cleaner, and odor-free carpets without using harsh chemicals with speedy cleaning.

5. Encapsulation

The method of encapsulation is also a preferred environment-friendly option. This consists of applying an eco-friendly foam or liquid detergent on the carpet and letting it work into its fibers. This applied detergent, then, crystalizes into a powder pulling out all the dirt with itself, which is, then, brushed up and thoroughly vacuumed.

The process, when used with safe detergents, can remove all the surface dirt without using water or harsh chemicals.

6. Natural Cleaning with DIY Solutions

When it comes to environment-friendly cleaning, natural DIY solutions tend to be the most reliable and safe. They are helpful in regular cleaning and treating common carpet stains. Here are two effective ones.

⇒ Baking Soda

Form a paste by mixing baking soda with some water or use it in powder form.

Apply it on the carpet and brush it, letting it penetrate deeply, and rest for several hours, preferably overnight. Vacuum the dried residue and you’ll get a clean and fresh carpet with a natural cleaning method.

⇒ Vinegar

Mix ½ cup of distilled white vinegar, 1 tbsp of dishwashing liquid, and ¼ cup of oxygen bleach with one gallon of hot water. Use this mixture to clean your carpet using a carpet cleaner.
