Things You’ll Need

  • Vacuum Cleaner
  • Soft Bristled Brush
  • Baking Soda
  • Vinegar
  • Castille Soap
  • Warm Water
  • Bug Spray
  • Disinfectant

How To Clean Used Furniture in 5 Easy Steps.

Step 1: Vacuum The Furniture

The very first thing you have to do is thoroughly vacuum the furniture. Vacuuming will remove loose soil and dirt particles and make cleaning tasks easy. Vacuum all the areas and clean both the upper and lower surfaces of your furniture. If possible, remove the cushions and vacuum the furniture to remove the dirt trapped inside.

Step 2: Disinfect The Furniture

After thoroughly vacuuming the furniture, disinfect it with a suitable disinfectant. You can use an eco-friendly disinfectant in case of allergy. Used furniture must be disinfected before use. A disinfectant kills bacteria and germs present inside the upholstery. And by disinfecting it, you ensure there are no harmful contaminants, and the furniture is hygienic and comfortable to use.

Step 3: Eliminate Bugs

This is an optional step, but we always advise applying a bug spray to the used furniture before using it. Especially when the furniture has not been used for a long time. If it was kept in a store room, there are certain chances that bugs have made their home in the upholstery. So apply the suitable bug spray on the furniture and vacuum it again after 24 hours.

Step 4: Remove Odor

Used furniture often smells musty. Several reasons, such as moisture and bacteria, cause such odors. But you can easily remove that musty smell;  baking soda is an effective agent that helps eliminate the musty odors. Sprinkle baking soda all over your furniture and use the soft-bristled brush to spread it everywhere. Leave it untouched for 3-5 hours, and lastly, vacuum out the excess soda.

Step 5: Clean The Stains

It is an important step. Before you start cleaning the stains on the furniture, check for the cleaning instruction tag on the upholstery. Check what type of cleaning is suitable for that upholstery. Generally, most upholstery types can be cleaned using a water-based cleaner. If yours is also the same, follow the nest instructions.

Mix 1 cup of warm water, ¼ cup of white vinegar, and a tablespoon of mild dish detergent into a spray bottle. Mix it thoroughly and spray the solution on the stained area of the furniture. Then gently start scrubbing it with a soft-bristled brush or a clean cloth. Lastly, blot the stain with paper towels and dry the furniture.
